The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a damaging waves alert for parts of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, with the coastline of Ray Nkonyeni and Umdoni Municipalities among the areas expected to be affected.

The warning, which is in effect from 18:00 today (Tuesday, September 16) until 23:59 tomorrow (Wednesday, September 17), comes as a cold front sweeps through the region.

The passage of a cold front tomorrow will result in strong southerly to south-westerly winds along the coast of KZN, leading to very rough to high seas with wave heights between 4m to 8m between Port Edward and Kosi Bay from this evening, moderating on Wednesday night.

Localised impacts are expected:

• Short-term disruptions at harbours and ports.

• Difficult navigation conditions for small vessels.

• Risk of smaller boats taking on water or capsizing.

• Possible damage to coastal infrastructure.

SAWS has advised the public to avoid beach and shore activities such as swimming or rock angling until conditions stabilise. Small boats should remain sheltered in harbours, with crews urged to secure their vessels with ample lines and fenders.

Residents and visitors are also warned to be alert for large waves breaking offshore and washing onto beaches and harbour areas.

The weather office emphasised that updates will be issued as the system develops.
