Museum plans multicultural festival
RNM's arts and culture manager, Thembi Khawula, said the festival aims to promote different cultures.
The Port Shepstone Maritime and Cultural Museum is set to showcase the heritage, history and diversity of cultures in the Ugu District and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality at a multicultural festival planned for December 13.
The museum management invited stakeholders for a planning session last Friday.
Museum curator, Phumzile Dlamini, chaired the meeting and said it is one celebration for all. “Together, we are the tapestry of humanity. Join us on December 13 for a cultural extravaganza. There will be cultural information stands, crafts stands, cultural dancing, aerobics, flea market, music and arts. “
One of the organisers, Susan Farrell, calls on the public to show off their different cultures on the day. “We request the public to share their history and heritage as proud South Africans in their diversity. Please come with your kids, there will be a play area with a pool and jumping castle. We also need donations of old traditional artefacts such as pots, hair, sleeping mats, leather skirts, settlers’ attire, furniture, books, kitchen utensils, clothing and tools. These are historic and part of our culture and heritage celebrations.”
RNM’s arts and culture manager, Thembi Khawula, said the festival aims to promote different cultures and to exhibit cultural artefacts and historic information.
“We have support from the Department of Arts and Culture in KZN. We also like to inform the public that the museum has re-opened to visitors.”
