South Coast chess quartet to represent KZN
According to the federation's administrator, Mzoh Madlala, they are honoured to have this quartet representing the province.
Ugu Chess Federation says it’s starting to bear the fruits of its hard work, as four of it players were selected to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the upcoming Mzansi Interprovincial Chess Tournament.
This major tournament will be held in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape from December 15 to 20.
According to the federation’s administrator, Mzoh Madlala, they are honoured to have this quartet representing the province. At last year’s tournament in Limpopo, KZN had no players from the Ugu region.
Aphendule Baleni will compete in the U16 girls’ division, Kynne Saunders and Keegan Gilmore will participate in the U20 boys’ division and Brahim Amenallah will test his skills in the U18 boys’ division.
Speaking on their selection, Madlala said: “It means a lot to us. If you look at the province, with 11 districts, and having four players being selected to represent the province is not child’s play, it shows as a district we are growing in chess. It shows we can compete at a high level of the game.”
He also indicated that the support they get from the local department of sports is amazing, and almost every time when they ask for assistance or input, they get positive response.
