Senior citizens showcase talent at parliament gathering in Umzinto
The event was opened with the melodious rendition of the national anthem.
Members of the Provincial Legislature attended the Senior Citizens Parliament in Umzinto last Thursday.
This fell under the theme ‘Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights’.
Unity in diversity, song and dance were the order of the day as senior citizens showcased their vocal talents and dance moves.
The seniors choir opened parliament with the melodious rendition of the national anthem.
Issues discussed included access to health care; provision of decent and affordable housing for the elderly; challenges pertaining to pension pay out and social grants; and the bridging of the digital divide among senior citizens.
Presenting the Senior Citizens Parliament’s Resolutions, KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, commended them that apart from being blessed with long life, they are also blessed with melodious voices, agility and vigour.
Ntuli recommended the need for a senior citizens council at municipal level, so that their needs are taken into account.
He was satisfied with the responses from various departments.
Umdoni mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli emphasised the importance of amplifying the senior citizens’ aspirations, protecting their rights and ensuring their well-being remains at the heart of government’s development agenda.
