Rollout of new electricity meters in Uvongo soon
The installation will be implemented in phases.
In the next 12 to 18 months all Eskom meters will be replaced with a new smart meter.
This was presented at a recent meeting at the Uvongo Town Hall, where residents came in numbers to listen to representatives from the power utility.
The installation of the new meters will be implemented in phases, starting with the the block between Konrad Drive in the south and Selvey Avenue in the north, and below Marine Drive and Lilliecrona Boulevard in the east in Uvongo.
The contractors have requested an outage from the community network coordinator and this will be communicated as soon as the date and time is known.
They will install communication devices at all the transformers which will communicate directly with the smart meters to be installed on all properties.
Each property will also be issued with a plug-in gadget where usage can be monitored from inside the property.
Ward councillor George Henderson said that it is important to note that the meters belong to Eskom.
“If your meter is inside your property, access to change the meter, may not be denied. The guilty owner will face serious consequences if access is denied.”
Henderson said that all meters will be replaced, including prepaid meters, and three phase meters at complexes and gated estates.
“Owners residing elsewhere, will be contacted by Eskom to arrange access. Please make sure your contact details are up-to-date. The contractor assigned to do the work can be identified by their vehicles and work uniforms. The smart meters are post and prepaid compatible. There will still be a fee payable to Eskom if you want to migrate to pre-paid.”
He added that the smart meter changeover comes at no cost to customers.
Henderson said that Eskom will communicate directly with him once they are ready for a new phase, which he will then share with the community.
