Frustration grows over street repair delays in Port Shepstone
Marburg Residents' and Ratepayers' Association's Fathima Moosa said the municipality is responsible for restoring the dug up area after fixing a water leak, if the leak originated from its infrastructure.
On Andreasen Street, near Port Shepstone Primary, residents and businessowners are disgusted at the state of their driveways after the municipality conducted pipe repairs, but failed to restore the dug up area.
Riaz Shaik who operates a business said: “Earlier this year, a large area was dug up near the school by Ugu District Municipality to fix a leaking pipe. The pipe was repaired, but the road was not retarred. Over time, this caused the road surface to deteriorate, making it difficult for motorists and learners to pass.”
“I have lived in this area for many years and this road has always been a mess,” said a resident. “Why does Ugu allow this to happen. If a pipe has been repaired, the area around it should be repaired within a few days, not several months or a year later. A pipe was replaced near the new Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court more than six months ago, but the site remains an eyesore.”
According to Fathima Moosa from the Marburg Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, the municipality is responsible for restoring the dug up area after fixing a water leak, if the leak originated from its infrastructure.
“Ugu is placing people’s lives in danger. Ratepayers deserve roads in good working condition and service delivery.”
Before going to print on Wednesday, a water pipe burst outside a business driveway on Andreasen Street again. While the leak was repaired on the same day, the businessowner hopes the road is fixed soon.
Ugu was contacted for comment, however, none was received at the time of going to press.
