Former South Coaster to lead Johannesburg Stock Exchange

Valdene Reddy's success is a shining example for youth from small towns, proving that dedication and vision can open doors to the highest levels of leadership.

Valdene Reddy (nee Naidoo), formerly of Port Shepstone, was recently appointed as Group CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

She will take up her new post on April 1, 2026.

A former learner of RA Engar Primary and Port Shepstone High, Reddy graduated with a Bachelor of Business Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town in 2004.

Her journey to the helm of the JSE is a story of perseverance, excellence and trailblazing ambition.

“I love maths which opened the door to pursue a degree in business science in actuarial science, and from that I was drawn to a world of capital markets and investments.”

She joined the JSE in 2015 as Head of Equity and Equity Derivatives, and quickly distinguished herself as a strategic and forward-thinking leader.

In 2020, she was appointed Director of Capital Markets, where she played a pivotal role in driving innovation and strengthening South Africa’s capital markets.

Prior to her tenure at the JSE, she gained extensive experience at Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Reconnaissance Capital.

Her success serves as a shining example for youth from small towns, proving that dedication, education and vision can open doors to the highest levels of leadership.

“It is an honour to be appointed as Group CEO, and I am delighted to lead this institution into its next chapter. My focus will be on accelerating innovation and enhancing our competitiveness through ongoing strategic transformation. I look forward to working with our talented team and valued partners to unlock new opportunities for growth and impact.”

Reddy visits her family and friends in Port Shepstone at least once a year.

“It’s not as often as I’d like to and the visits are always too short. But while here, I love driving through my old neighbourhood, where I went to school or church, reminiscing about the ‘good old days’. Port Shepstone is not a sleepy town and I loved my childhood days which were full of adventure,” she said.
