Ocean lovers fundraise for NSRI Shelly Beach and Port Edward stations
There's still time to contribute, as the fundraiser has been extended to the end of November.
Despite rainy and cold weather, community spirit shone at the Splish Splash Tidal Pool fundraiser hosted by Exploring South Coast recently.
Participants explored 12 of the Lower South Coast’s unique tidal pools, proving once again that passion and community can outshine any storm.
Throughout the day, participants enjoyed insightful talks and demonstrations. The NSRI team delivered vital CPR lessons and ocean safety information while also welcoming visitors for an informative tour of the Port Edward NSRI base – offering a rare glimpse into the lifesaving work done by these brave volunteers.

“One of the most memorable stops was at the Shelly Beach tidal pool, where Michelle Robertson from South Coast Diving co-hosted a snorkelling demonstration. The marine life left participants in awe with many describing it as the highlight of the day, a moment shared by kindred spirits united by a love of the ocean,” said Deseré Bouillon, event organiser.
“Beneath the surface of the tidal pools, I discovered another world-alive, colourful and sacred. Snorkelling opened my eyes to creation’s beauty and the courage of those who protect it. Grateful for the people, the laughter, and the stories shared,” said Bronwyn Snyman.
“The South Coast has lots of well maintained tidal pools. My favourite was Shelley Beach. Lots of sea life and beautiful coral,” added Muriel de Vries.

“We are privileged to have tidal pools. My greatest experience was building sandcastles, and the sea life and beautiful coral in Shelly Beach tidal pool was amazing,” said Schanet Richardson.
An amount of R5600 was raised through tidal pool tour participants, local businesses and private individuals. To help reach, and hopefully exceed, the goal of R10 000, the fundraiser has been extended to the end of November.
All proceeds will be donated to the NSRI Shelly Beach and Port Edward stations – to support the heroes who safeguard the coastline.
