Ocean lover takes on eight-mile swim to raise funds for NSRI Shelly Beach
Christo van Rooyen calls on the community to come down to the finish line and support the cause by making a donation – big or small.
Ocean lover and NSRI supporter, Christo van Rooyen (29), is taking on a remarkable challenge later this month – swimming about eight miles from Shelly Beach to Margate to raise funds for NSRI Shelly Beach.
The swim will take place on Saturday, November 29, with Christo setting off from the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club at 08:00 and expected to finish at Margate main beach around 14:00.
Christo is calling on the community to come down to the finish line and support the cause by making a donation – big or small – to help the volunteers who dedicate their time to saving lives at sea.
Throughout the swim, a NSRI rescue vessel will be keeping a close watch over him, with Med-Evac on standby to ensure his safety.
“I’m praying for good weather, so I can complete this journey in support of all the volunteers who risk their lives to save others,” said Christo.
Originally from the Western Cape, Christo grew up by the ocean and has spent years volunteering with the NSRI. Having witnessed the devastation of drownings first-hand, he says this cause is deeply personal.
“This cause is close to my heart, and I am passionate about saving lives. This swim is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” he said.
Those wishing to contribute can visit the NSRI Shelly Beach base, where a donation table will be set up on the day.
