RNM deputy mayor’s bodyguards arrested in traffic blitz – #NenzaniLaEzweni

Two bodyguards assigned to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) deputy mayor Sbusiso Shange were arrested on Tuesday this week.

They appeared in court on Wednesday and were granted bail.

According to a statement released by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the pair were arrested during the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation, championed by the No- Nonsense Road Traffic Inspectorate in Park Rynie.
The operation resulted in the arrest of a number of motorists, including a medical doctor, an attorney, and a regional manager.

The bodyguards are facing charges of reckless driving, illegal use of blue lights, impersonating a police officer, and for carrying a firearm without a firearm license.
The blue lights were confiscated and the official BMW X5 was also impounded.

“We are cleaning up our road networks, restoring law and order, and ensuring the safety of road users as guided by the National Road Traffic Act,” said Duma.

RNM issued a statement earlier today (Friday 28th).

Simon April, spokesman from RNM, said that at the time of the alleged incident, the two bodyguards were reportedly travelling in the official vehicle allocated to the deputy mayor.

He confirmed that the deputy mayor was not present in the vehicle when the incident occurred.

“The municipality wishes to place on record that RNM upholds and promotes the principles of legality, accountability, and strict compliance with all laws and regulations governing the conduct of municipal employees, including those relating to road traffic, use of state resources, and public safety.”

April said that while the matter remains under investigation by the Saps and will follow the necessary judicial processes.

“The municipality has initiated its own internal processes to ascertain the facts and determine the appropriate action in line with applicable municipal policies and legislative prescripts.

April said the municipality views the alleged conduct in a serious light and assures the public that the matter will be handled with the required diligence, transparency, and procedural fairness.
