Ugu District is ready for the festive season
While there are challenges, all departments are ready to welcome visitors to the South Coast.
Ugu District Disaster Department, Law Enforcement and Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) say they are ready for the holiday season.
This was shared at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital boardroom last Tuesday, when the KZN Legislature Health Portfolio Committee visited and met with these departments to hear of their seasonal plans.

Other departments present were Saps and Forensic Services.
The committee was firm with its questions and according to chairperson, Dr Imran Keeka, this visit was to help the various departments to function better.
Ugu Disaster Management and Fire Services manager, Senzo Madiba said they are ready for the season, but have some challenges.

One such issue is overtime. He added that once staff has reached certain overtime hours, they cannot be responsive.
However, he said that the municipality has written a letter to the provincial government and asked for intervention from the political leadership.
Meanwhile, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Law Enforcement’s Superintendent Sfiso Ngcaku said road blocks will be set up every day, along with surveillance cameras to help them.

He added that their operations start from 07:00 to 22:00 and thereafter they have standby officers.
“We will also be on foot in some areas to help with traffic management and by-laws.”
Ngcaku elaborated the challenge faced by his department is that the courts are not helping much in terms of issuing the correct fines.
He said motorists are fined, but the courts reduce the amount to a minimum, which sometimes make their work meaningless, and motorists end up re-offending.
