Widenham Beach motorbike-riding crayfish poacher charged
The man was found in possession of six shad and 18 crayfish.
The Coastal Marine Task Force (CMTF) received reports from members of the public regarding active crayfish poaching in the Widenham Beach area last Thursday.
A man was seen arriving on a motorbike and later leaving the area with bags suspected to contain crayfish.
AT Security and CMTF were alerted to his activities. Shortly after, AT Security response units located the man using the positive description provided by the public.
When the man was confronted, he was found in possession of six shad and 18 crayfish, many of which were undersized.
CMTF was called to the scene and confirmed that the suspect was in possession of two shad over the permitted daily bag limit of four, and crayfish during the closed season, which extends from November 1 to the last day of February.
The individual was taken to Umkomaas Saps, arrested, and formally charged under the Marine Living Resources Act by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment officials.
It was also noted that the man was previously charged for the same offence.
