Detective Captain Sibonele Cyprian Cele has over three decades of loyal service.
Umkomaas Saps will bid farewell to Group Commander of Detective Service, Detective Captain Sibonele Cyprian Cele on December 31.
Cele joined Saps in 1992 and has 33 years loyal, uninterrupted service.
The Umkomaas members thank Cele for the numerous lessons learnt from him to serve people with dedication, humility and resilience.
“This true man in blue had a fruitful career mentoring many investigating officers (detectives) and retires after a momentous career serving 30 years in crime detection and acting on an ad hoc basis as a Detective Commander,” said Umkomaas Saps spokesperson, Captain Ranjith Rampersad.
“He was entrusted in numerous leadership roles, and during his tenure he served with decorum in the community service centre and crime prevention units, and was active in the apprehension of criminals in the then task teams.”
Cele enjoyed fostering community policing and activated numerous informers within the community.
The Detective Commander, Lt Colonel John Ngema, said that as a branch there are mixed feelings by the departure of a legend as he has got accustomed to being known as an efficient and professional detective and never hesitated to arrest criminals.
“He served the citizens of Umkomaas by keeping them safe, preventing crime and promoting crime detection. We praise Cele for being a great commissioned police officer from October 1, 2009, an epitome of a servant leader,” said Ngema.
He received his Deed of Commission from the State President on December 17, 2010 and has been described as a true cop, a man of action who served the community for decades with sheer diligence and commitment.
“His ability to motivate his peers is admirable. He is an asset that the Saps is going to miss for his tons of expertise, especially in investigation of crime,” added Rampersad.
In January this year, Cele received a meritorious certificate from the station in recognition and appreciation of his exceptional contribution and dedication to excellence while acting as detective head.
In 2003 he received a commendation for risking his life to arrest two murder suspects who shot at him at Umkomaas in 2002; and in 2004 he was responsible for arresting seven suspects and recovered property valued at R50 000 for 14 armed robbery cases committed during October to November that year.
