Drunk taxi driver arrested on N2 at Umzinto

It is believed he almost drove towards oncoming traffic.

A taxi driver started off his new year behind bars after driving while under the influence of alcohol – 10 times over the legal limit.

On the morning of January 2, at about 04:00, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, gave a further mandate to the highly effective Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate team.

Shortly after telling RTI to have no mercy on unruly motorists, the taxi driver was arrested on the South Coast.

The bottle of alcohol found in the driver’s possession.

According to the KZN Department of Transport, the driver was carrying passengers and intercepted along the N2 at the Umzinto River – which is a notably dangerous zone.

“He was under surveillance through RTI’s cutting edge technology, and was observed swerving across lanes,” said Duma.

“He almost drove towards oncoming traffic.”

When the driver was stopped, the RTI team found a bottle of Smirnoff inside the taxi. On testing him, he was found to be 10 times over the legal limit.

He was arrested and taken to Scottburgh Saps.

Duma stated that this arrest prevented the driver from killing passengers and other innocent road users.
