Mzimkhulu River bridge repairs resume
The bridge was closed in March 2025 for emergency rehabilitation.
Repair work on the Mzimkhulu River bridge resumed on Tuesday this week after the festive season break.
Spokesperson for the KZN Department of Transport Ndabezinhle Sibiya said on Wednesday that allcontractors have started operations. “The single stop-go lane will continue as normal,” he added.
The bridge was closed in March 2025 for major emergency repairs and rehabilitation.
Both residents and commuters have also expressed their frustration over the long queues at the stop-and-go points, the impatience of drivers, clouds of dust, loose gravel, and the countless potholes on the R102.

While motorists are grateful for the single lane, concerns have been raised about the R102 project – a section from the bridge to Rethman Drive in Umtentweni. Over the past ten months, progress has been limited to the removal of the existing road surface.
Nazir Shaikh, the chairperson of the North Cluster Ratepayers’ Association said: “If such a limited stretch of road has not been completed over the course of 10 months, how can one expect the project to be finalised within the remaining 14 months of the 24-month contract. With the reopening of schools next week, it is likely that the situation will only become worse.”
Carol Meth, chairperson of the Bendigo Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association said it is particularly concerning with the re-opening of schools. “Motorists are faced with horrendous conditions from the bridge to Umtentweni. It is disappointing, and we hope that the contractors can improve these road conditions,” she said.
