Hibberdene: The coast’s slow-living seaside town

Hibberdene Beach is for folks who want a real coastal escape.

Nestled midway between Scottburgh and Margate, Hibberdene is a serene little seaside retreat on the South Coast. It flies its Blue Flag with pride, and while it hums with laid-back charm, it’s also a lively beach with plenty of activity.

Benches and tables tucked under the magnificent old milkwoods make it a favourite spot for picnics or a peaceful lunchtime break. The large grassed area is ideal for children to kick a soccer ball around, and the river mouth is a popular launching point for fishermen and boats.

Interestingly, Hibberdene is named after C. Maxwell-Hibberd, a former postmaster-general of Natal.

Hibberdene is not too flash, not too wild – just honest and full of natural beauty. If Umzumbe felt like a chilled corner of the world, Hibberdene is its thoughtful, slightly older sibling: gentle, grounded and soulful in its own way.

Five must-knows about Hibberdene Beach:

Hibberdene beach proudly flies its Blue Flag, recognising its clean coastline, good facilities and safe swimming conditions.
