Birders get spotting at Bendigo Nature Reserve in Southport

Allan McLennan from Pennington gave an interesting talk.

Bendigo Conservancy hosted a Big Birding Day at B Cubed, Southport last Sunday morning. The event which was postponed from last year attracted a number of early birds to access the Bendigo Nature Reserve, where Allan McLennan from Pennington guided the walk and talk.

Bird lovers spent the morning observing and identifying local birdlife along the nature reserve. Later, birders moved to the Umzumbe Farmers’ Park for coffee and scones under cover, going out for another walk.

Allan McLennan from Pennington conducted the guided walk.

McLennan offered a highly entertaining and informed talk with his passion of over 40 years shining through, and punctuated with lots of laughter, finishing the day with a braai. Joan Gallagher of Bendigo Conservation Group said the event was a most enjoyable day.

Bendigo Conservancy will be hosting a butterfly talk at Mbango Retirement Village followed by a walk around the gardens on Sunday, February 15, from 13.30 to 16:00.

Guest speaker will be by Xolani Prince Tshaka, a lepidopterist at Ramsgate Butterfly Valley. He also belongs to the Munster Conservancy. Cost is R40 person and R30 for pensioners. Tea, coffee and scones will be on sale. For further details or bookings, contact Dee on 071 8662129 by Saturday, February 14.

Donations to Bendigo Conservancy are welcome.
