RNM ‘strike’: Workers temporarily suspend ‘tools down’

This is a not a new issue and workers feel strongly that they have been unfairly treated in terms of salary scale upgrades.

Zwe Chiliza, the chairperson for South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said workers have temporarily suspended the current ‘tools down’.

ANC leadership met yesterday (Thursday) with the involved parties, to hear all sides of the story.

Chiliza said the ANC advised that the workers be graded to grade 5 and that the court case be withdrawn – and to allow council to discuss the matter so that the municipality can implement the changes.

However, the meeting and discussions have not prevented rubbish bags from piling up and residents have had to deal with their rubbish not being collected.

Port Shepstone CBD looks like a dumpsite, with rubbish scattered all over town.

The possibility of the strike continuing will depend on how quickly the withdrawal of the case is made.
