Security officer rescues terrapin at abandoned house in Umbango
It is believed the terrapin could have been sold for traditional medicine.
Security officers are often chasing criminals, instead Lazer 911 Security reaction officer Winston Lemon, rescued a marsh terrapin at an abandoned house on Crescent Street, Umbango recently.
Prior to the rescue, Lemon had been conducting a search of the house, a known hideout for criminals. “Two men saw me and made a run for it into the dense vegetation. They dropped a bag, as I got closer, it moved. I opened it and found the terrapin.”
He took the terrapin to Pure Venom for some TLC.
Nicknamed ‘Whiskey’, Lemon, often goes beyond the call of duty for his community. Therefore, he decided it was appropriate to name the terrapin, ‘Johnny Walker’.
For now, Johnny Walker has a safe marsh at Pure Venom and will remain there for the some time before being set free.
It is believed the terrapin could have been sold for traditional medicine.
The African helmeted turtle (pelomedusa subrufa), also commonly known as the marsh terrapin, inhabits fresh/stagnant water often burying itself in mud during dry periods.
