Amazing support for pet vaccination drive in Pumula

The Lower South Coast SPCA hosted a well-supported pet vaccination drive at Pumula Ski Boat Club recently, giving local pet owners access to essential, life-saving vaccinations for their dogs and cats.
Pets were vaccinated against potentially fatal diseases, including rabies, distemper, parvo, cat flu and snuffles.

Rabies, which affects all mammals, remains a serious public-health threat worldwide and is entirely preventable through vaccination.
As of September 2025, the Department of Agriculture had confirmed 11 human rabies fatalities across SA for the calendar year, and 242 animal rabies cases were recorded between January 1 and August 31, 2025, with KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo listed as ‘hot spot’ areas.

“Vaccinating pets is not just about protecting animals, it’s about protecting people too,” said Mike Davis, manager and inspector at the Lower South Coast SPCA.
“Diseases like rabies are fatal once clinical symptoms appear, yet they are completely preventable. By vaccinating pets, especially in areas where communities have little access to healthcare for their pets, we reduce suffering, prevent outbreaks of these various diseases, and keep entire communities safer.”

In addition to vaccinations, the SPCA made over-the-counter treatments available, including deworming and tick-and-flea products, helping owners provide ongoing preventative care for their pets.

The SPCA is the country’s only animal welfare organisation gazetted into law, with the authority to investigate and prosecute cruelty, and to protect all animals – from companion pets and livestock to wildlife, reptiles, birds and fish.
SPCAs across the country, like most welfare organisations, are under immense financial pressure. Each SPCA is established by and serves its local community, relying entirely on that community for funding.
Please support to keep the local SPCA operating at full capacity! Larger financial donations are eligible for an 18A tax certificate on request.
Including the SPCA of your choice in your will (which must be specifically named to avoid confusion) is a powerful way to continue supporting vulnerable animals long into the future.
