OPINION: Christian love is not rooted in emotion alone
It is rooted in commitment, sacrifice, patience and grace.

Here is a Christian response to Happiness Stan’s letter in a recent edition of the South Coast Herald.
From a Christian perspective, marriage is not merely a friendship or a contract of mutual satisfaction.
It is a covenant before God. Scripture teaches that marriage is meant to reflect God’s steadfast love: “What God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Mark 10:9)
Feelings change. People grow. Seasons shift.
But Christian love is not rooted in emotion alone. It is rooted in commitment, sacrifice, patience and grace.
To say after decades, “We should never have married,” frames marriage as a consumer arrangement: valuable only while it pleases us.
Christianity challenges that mindset. Love, in biblical terms, means choosing faithfulness even when it is difficult, serving one another even when the romance fades, and honoring vows even when life becomes costly.
Marriage is not designed only for happiness. It is designed for holiness, character formation, forgiveness, and enduring companionship.
Yes, people change. Yes, relationships evolve. But instead of abandoning a covenant when it becomes uncomfortable, the Christian call is to renew love, seek reconciliation, grow in humility, and honor promises made before God.
