Granny Grommets catch waves and make memories in Scottburgh

The group meets every Thursday at the beach at 08:00.

It was an exciting morning for Granny Grommets at Scottburgh Main Beach last Thursday.

The local ladies were joined by the Durban Granny Grommets, making it an enjoyable and memorable session for all.

The Durban group receives a warm welcome.

Mid-South Coast local Yvonne Klopper started the Scotties Granny Grommets in October 2024, after meeting up with the Nahoon Granny Grommets while on a caravan trip at Yellowsands, Eastern Cape.

“We are a group of ladies, between the ages of 50 to 80, who enjoy bodyboarding (boogie boarding) and have a special love for the ocean,” she explained.

The waves were great.

The group meets every Thursday at the beach at 08:00.

“It’s so wonderful to be part of a group of ladies who have the same love and passion to just have fun and catch waves. It brings the child out in us and lifts our spirits,” she added.

Yvonne said that welcoming the Durban group last week made for a delightful morning, and the weather, waves and camaraderie were perfect.

It was a perfect day for everyone.

“We all went for breakfast at Scottie’s coffee shop after our session in the waves, and the Durban group spent the rest of the morning sitting in the rock pools.”

The Durban group thanks the local ladies for all the fun and great hospitality. They thoroughly enjoyed Scotties waters and said the rock pools did not disappoint.

The Scotties Granny Grommets invite all ladies and grannies to join the group on Thursdays. Bodyboards can be hired from the lifesavers.

Take note: The SA Granny Grommets are holding a festival at Nahoon Beach on July 4-5, and Yvonne is hoping to take a group along from Scotties.
