Festive fun facts test brains at Self Help Association for the Seniors get-together in Uvongo

Save the date - as the February gathering will be on the 19th.

Could you name all nine of Santa’s reindeer?

If so, then you would have enjoyed the January Shafts (Self Help Association for the Seniors) get together held at the Uvongo Tennis club recently.

Turn-out was sadly on the low side but the members who did pitch up had a fun morning of brain testing.

On arrival everyone was bemused to see the tables decorated with a Christmassy theme.

Mr Entertainment, Paul Korb, explained that with Christmas having taken place almost a month ago, he was going to find out if we remembered any Festive Fun Facts.

Some did, some didn’t and some invented new ones.

Roger Linter who captained the Naughty Elves’ team declared Bonzo was a good reindeer name. His festive facts made for merry reading and much mirth.

Quiz master, Nicci Lavery, posed 60 questions and five teams answered…or attempted to answer.

For the three months leading up to Christmas all we ever heard being played in the shopping centres was Boney M belting out ‘Feliz Navidad’ but a month later most of us forgot that it is ‘happy Christmas’ in Spanish.

The HoHoHo team remembered the most yule time stuff.

Tied in second spot were the Three Stooges and Graeme and the Girls’ teams followed by the Nightriders and the Naughty Elves.

In between the Q and A sessions everyone tucked into tasty cream scones and cheese puffs.

Shafts’ chairperson, Colleen Haggard thanked Len Rautenbach and Val Kriel for catering, Heather van Rooyen and Grant Phillips for carting all the paraphernalia – tea, coffee, milk, sugar – and for collecting all the dosh and selling lucky draw tickets.

“A huge vote of appreciation goes to Paul and Nicci for compiling the quiz and putting the cheer-filled event together. The biggest thanks goes to the members who supported Festive Fun Facts.”

She added that it was lovely to meet visitor Lynne Fisher who recently relocated to Ramsgate, and it’s hoped she will soon be a Shafts’ member.

Congratulations to Simon Crowley who won the lucky draw.
