Easter Sunday drowning claims one life at Scottburgh beach

Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, the woman was declared dead by first responders.

A 21-year-old woman was found unresponsive and floating in the water at Scottburgh main beach yesterday (April 5).

Reports indicate that lifeguards brought her ashore and CPR was initiated by the lifeguards and members of the public, prior to the arrival of first responders.

IPSS Medical Rescue arrived at the scene and continued with Advanced Life Support resuscitation efforts.

Despite all the efforts, the young woman was declared dead.

Umdoni Municipality temporarily banned bathing at Scottburgh beach after the tragedy, and urges all residents and visitors to remain vigilant when swimming, adhere to safety guidelines, and to respect the instructions of lifeguards and emergency personnel.

Mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli stated that the municipality will also offer assistance to the bereaved family, should it be needed.

“Our thoughts are with them as they navigate this painful tragedy,” she said.

An update will be provided once comment is received from police.
