Sunbird stuns Marina Beach family with surprise indoor visit

A collared sunbird turns Jane Franz’s home into a brief sanctuary.

The most extraordinary thing happened recently in Jane Franz’s Marina Beach home.

A tiny collared sunbird flew in through the kitchen window, zipped around the house, and eventually found its way into her son Marc’s bedroom. Marc gently picked it up and carried it outside, hoping to release it back into the garden.

But the little bird had other plans.

Instead of flying off, it came straight back inside and settled itself in the sunroom, quite content. Slightly baffled, Marc phoned his mom: “What do I do? It won’t leave.”

Jane’s advice was simple: put the dogs away and place a bowl of water nearby.

With the house quiet and calm, the sunbird stayed for a while, allowing a rare, close-up moment that felt almost surreal. A few photos were taken as it rested, completely unfazed by its temporary human hosts.

Eventually, and very much on its own terms, the tiny visitor flew off again.

Just another unexpected brush with nature in the wonderful world of Franz.
