Garden tools donation strengthens food security in Umdoni

Communal gardens offer food security, job creation, social cohesion and economic upliftment.

Umdoni Municipality donated gardening equipment to two local non-profits, Sheshisa Communal Garden in Ward 16 and Masibambisane Communal Garden in Ward 18 on April 13.

The handover took place during the IDP and Draft Budget Roadshow.

For the 2026/27 financial year, Umdoni has proposed significant allocations to strengthen communal and household food security initiatives. This includes: communal gardens support – R300 000; tractor support R300 000; one home – one garden – R320 000; and SMME and co-op development – R1 000 000.

Mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli praised the initiative, and said that communal gardens are more than just food sources, they are engines of community building and economic resilience.

“When we plant seeds together, we are planting hope,” she explained.

“These gardens are proof that when government and communities unite, we can fight poverty, create jobs, and restore dignity. Umdoni is committed to ensuring that no household goes hungry and that every community has the tools to thrive.”

Communal gardens offer food security, job creation, social cohesion and economic upliftment.

Luthuli closed the handover ceremony by highlighting that the donations made to communal garden NPOs are more than a handover of tools, they are a symbol of Umdoni’s vision for a self-reliant, united and prosperous community.
