Long trek in Gamalakhe makes snake rescue tougher than catch

The hike through steep terrain made this call-out one to remember.

Catching the snake turned out to be the easy part for snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe, who had to trek nearly two kilometres up and down steep terrain to reach the property in Gamalakhe.

The black mamba had climbed into the roof trusses, proving just how high – and how far – these snakes can go.

The tough terrain that Sarel van der Merwe had to walk to get to the mamba.

Sarel explained that while black mambas are less active in winter, it is also their mating season. They are often seen basking in the sun and, interestingly, don’t eat during this time.

“Imagine how easy and cost effective it would be not to feed your girlfriend during winter,” he joked.

If you need a snake rescued, contact Sarel on 082 6831604.
