CLAMPDOWN: Authorities raid shops and salons in Port Shepstone CBD

During the raid many foreigners ran away and hid in shops but were caught.

More than 30 illegal and undocumented foreigners were arrested in Port Shepstone CBD today.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, SAPS, Law Enforcement, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Labour and Department of Immigration were all involved.

RNM leadership, along with their law enforcement officers, handed over the illegal foreigners at the Port Shepstone police station.

During the raid many foreigners ran away and hid in shops but were subsequently apprehended.

Phumlani Gumbi, speaker for RNM, said this was only the beginning.

“We will continue raiding the whole of RNM to make sure that we clean our towns,” he said.

A mother and child were among those arrested. Some shops and salons were closed after the raid.

A video of the clampdown was posted earlier today, with more than 320 comments pouring in.

Comments on the Herald’s Facebook page showed how the public reacted.

Some praised the initiative and suggested harsh measures for offenders. Some said why only now.

Others suggested the problem was as a result of bigger problems in the area and country, with a focus on the country’s borders and also with a link to drugs.

Many commenters asked for this to come to other towns on the coast.
