Muso gives back to South Coast Hospice

South Coasters were out in force to welcome renowned local folk musician Nibs van der Spuy to Southbroom for the first time.
The internationally-acclaimed guitarist is back in South Africa to celebrate his 60th birthday, and he included a few tour dates to mark the occasion.

The Southbroom show was in aid of South Coast Hospice, a cause that’s very close to Nibs’ heart since his mother was forced into a care home a couple of years ago. Beatrice ‘BT’ King is a familiar face on the South Coast, perennially raising funds for South Coast Hospice.
She welcomed everyone and explained how crucial these fundraisers are to hospice, with at least six professionals needed to provide top-quality palliative care. BT and Nibs have worked together previously, and were thrilled to do so again.

The clubhouse was packed as the Benoni-born muso kicked off his first set with a range of favourites from his 11-album discography. Now based in Lisbon in Portugal, Nibs admitted he was amped to be back and re-acquainting himself with some “old friends” – several distinctive guitars he left in South Africa.
He kicked things off with an electric guitar, soon switched to a ten-string acoustic and even played a couple of tunes on his six-string guitar-ukelele hybrid.
After a 40 minute first set, dinner was served, and a second, hour-long set followed.
Nibs concluded his concert with a Bach medley on the guitar-lele, before Desere Bouillon of Exploring South Coast made a few people’s day. She rounded off the evening by handing out several generous raffle prizes and gift cards to the lucky winners.
