Protesters demand water, road upgrade in Makhoso

Several meetings have been held with the Department of Transport and Human Settlements about the poor condition of the D2191, but nothing fruitful has come of it.

Mtwalume residents in Makhoso area in Ward 20 are tired of empty promises from the Department of Transport and Human Settlements and Ugu District Municipality. The community protested on May 11 about the terrible condition of the D2191, a busy access road, and the lack of water.

They claimed that they have had water issues for years, but no one has come to their rescue.

According to a statement from Ugu, the municipality is working in the area to sort out the water issues and is providing weekly updates to the community.

Broken bottles and stones are used to block the road in the Makhoso area.

Furthermore, residents added that they have had several meetings with the Department of Transport and Umzumbe Municipality to discuss the D2191 issue, but nothing fruitful has come of it.

A community member, Maureen Mlambo said Umzumbe Municipality organised a meeting with the department, and since June 2025 meetings have been held, but the road is still not fixed.

“We are tired of being called to meetings all the time, however, when it’s time for the relevant departments to act, we see no action. We can barely walk or drive on the road.”

The Department of Transport’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
