Rescue dog's story offers hope

A fundraising event is planned on May 26 to help other dogs that have faced similar hardships.

A little dog, later named Casey, was found on the side of the busy R61 near the Wild Coast alone and in immense pain in April last year. Her leg was broken, her body was covered in mange, scars and scabs.

Despite her suffering, there was a spark in her eyes that Port Edward resident, Alida Stofberg, couldn’t ignore.

Casey, an Africanis, was taken to Port Edward veterinarian, Dr Dave Watson, where she received the care she desperately needed. A piece of bone splinter was removed from her leg, her mange was treated, and she was spayed. Her story of resilience touched many hearts.

It was in this time that her new owner came into the picture, looking to adopt a dog in need. Marilyn Burn saw Casey and, in that moment, knew she had to give this little fighter a second chance at life.

Casey’s journey inspired Marilyn to do more. In June 2025, she established a registered non-profit organisation, Casey’s Cause, to help other animals. “Our aim is to provide a lifeline for dumped and neglected dogs, offering them the same hope and healing that Casey found. Since then, we’ve been able to help more dogs than what we can count which were abandoned and forgotten,” said Marilyn.

BEFORE AND AFTER: Casey the Africanis was rescued in April 2025.

“Each of these dogs has a story, a past filled with pain and neglect, but now they also have a future filled with love and care. Casey’s Cause is more than just about rescuing animals, it’s about restoring their faith in humanity and giving them the happy, safe lives they deserve,” said Alida.

A fundraising event is planned ‘Casey’s Cause Fundraiser’ to help other dogs that faced similar hardship. The event takes place at The Wreck Restaurant in Port Edward on Tuesday, May 26 at 18:00. Those attending can prepare for a memorable night filled with generosity, laughter, great company and exciting prizes, all in support of Casey’s Cause.

Tickets cost R200 and a lucky ticket holder can stand a chance to win a R10 000 cash prize. There will be additional lucky draw prizes on the evening.
