No snack for snake at tuck shop

Sarel van der Merwe responds to several calls, bringing peace of mind to residents.

South Coast snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe has once again been keeping local communities safe after responding to several dangerous snake call-outs this month.

Sarel recently removed a black mamba from inside a tuck shop in Port Edward, leaving the shop owner and the surrounding community relieved after the successful rescue. He was assisted by his friend, Johan Etzebeth, who also helped capture photographs during the removal.

Earlier this month, Sarel safely removed a green mamba from a home in Merlewood, Port Shepstone, bringing peace of mind to the family living there.

In another dramatic incident, Sarel responded to reports of a large black mamba inside a house in Bhomela.

While catching the highly venomous snake, he noticed rats inside the property and used the opportunity to warn residents about keeping homes and surroundings clean.

He explained that rats and mice attract snakes looking for food and shelter, especially dangerous species such as mambas.

“Guys, if you don’t keep your place clean, you will have rats and mice, and that calls for snakes,” he said.

Sarel continues to educate communities about the importance of respecting wildlife and contacting trained professionals for safe removals rather than attempting to catch snakes themselves.

His quick response and calm approach have earned him praise from residents across the South Coast, with several families expressing gratitude after the successful removals.
