Snake catcher keeps South Coast safe

The communities of Gcilima and Boboyi were relieved after snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe safely removed unwelcome visitors.

The community of Gcilima was left on a happier note when snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe successfully caught their unwanted visitor on May 3.

Residents raised the alarm after spotting the highly venomous black mamba in the kitchen of a home, situated about 10km inland from Southbroom.

Sarel, who operates in Shelly Beach and the surrounding areas, responded swiftly and successfully captured the snake without incident.

“It was an easy catch, and I left a happy community behind,” he said.

The black mamba is regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous snakes due to its potent venom and speed.

Sarel added that the sighting was somewhat unusual for this time of year.

“Strangely, there wasn’t a second black mamba around, as it is currently mating season,” he explained.

Then on May 4, Sarel had to climb a tree to remove a green mamba in Boboyi, next to homes.
Also, leaving behind happy faces.

He urged residents to remain calm when encountering snakes and to avoid attempting to handle them, stressing that trained handlers should always be contacted.
