JUST IN: March and March supporters assemble in Marburg [WATCH]

Community safety structures and police have been placed on alert as a large crowd gathers in Marburg for the planned March and March demonstration.

More than 250 people have gathered at KFC Marburg this morning ahead of today’s planned March and March demonstration.

Members of the citizen-led movement marched from Marburg to the Port Shepstone CBD from 09:00.

According to March and March chairperson in Port Shepstone, Sabelo Cele, the movement is calling for stronger immigration enforcement, arguing that illegal foreigners place a strain on public services, jobs and economic opportunities in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Ugu District CPF deputy chairperson Selvan Chetty called on CPF members and community safety structures across the district to remain vigilant and report any incidents that may violate the law.

“Peaceful protest and demonstration is allowed, however, damage to property, theft and violence is against the law and will not be tolerated in this district,” said Chetty.

He urged CPF structures, Community in Blue members, private security companies and other partners to assist Saps and law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order during the demonstration.

Police are monitoring the march and no incidents have been reported.
