Stay vigilant but remain calm ahead of Tuesday’s march (June 30th)
The March and March protest action will now take place locally, despite its local leaders saying that it wouldn't.
Developments surrounding the planned anti-illegal immigration protests expected to take place on June 30 are being closely monitored by the Margate Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive committee, in conjunction with Saps, law enforcement agencies and security companies.
This follows a media statement issued by the Margate CPF executive committee earlier this evening.
No reason for panic
According to the statement, while reports indicate that the greatest potential for unrest currently appears to be concentrated in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, residents across South Africa are encouraged to remain aware of the situation, as demonstrations and related incidents may not necessarily be confined to these provinces.
At this stage, there is no reason for panic in the Margate sector (Southbroom to St Michaels).
However, there is every reason for residents to remain informed, vigilant and prepared.
The statement noted that South Africans have previously experienced how quickly peaceful protests can escalate into violent situations, creating risks not only for those directly involved but also for innocent members of the public.
It added that the events of July 2021 remain a reminder of the importance of preparedness, responsible decision-making and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
Avoid spreading rumours
The CPF further encouraged its substructures and the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information, rumours or inflammatory content on social media.
It said accurate information and responsible communication remain among the most effective tools available to communities during periods of uncertainty.
Safety recommendations
The Margate CPF executive committee encourages residents to consider the following precautions:
- Stay informed by following updates from trusted community safety structures, Community Policing Forums, Neighbourhood watches, accredited Security companies, municipalities and Law Enforcement agencies.
- Ensure that your vehicle has sufficient fuel in the days leading up to and during the planned protests, as road closures, traffic congestion and unexpected route changes may occur.
- Plan travel routes in advance and identify suitable alternative routes where possible.
- Avoid known protest areas whenever possible. If demonstrations are announced in your vicinity, consider postponing non-essential travel.
- Allow extra travelling time, particularly where traffic disruptions may occur.
- Keep your mobile phone fully charged and ensure that emergency contact numbers are readily available.
- Inform family members of your intended travel routes and expected arrival times.
- Should you encounter a protest while driving, do not attempt to drive through crowds, barricades or roadblocks. Turn around safely and make use of an alternative route.
- If you find yourself near a gathering that becomes aggressive or volatile, leave the area immediately and avoid any confrontation.
- Do not engage with protesters, argue with crowds or place yourself at risk by attempting to film confrontational situations at close range.
- Businesses are encouraged to review contingency plans, brief staff on emergency procedures and remain in contact with their security providers.
- Community safety structures should maintain open communication channels and share only verified information with residents.
The Margate CPF executive committee will continue to monitor developments closely in cooperation with Saps, local law enforcement, emergency services, security partners and community safety structures.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert, support one another, report criminal activity promptly and allow law enforcement agencies to perform their duties without interference.
“The best response during periods of uncertainty is not panic, but preparation. Communities that remain informed, connected and vigilant are far better positioned to protect themselves, their families and their businesses.”
The Margate CPF executive committee thanked all residents, businesses, neighbourhood watches, security companies and volunteers for their continued commitment to maintaining a safe and secure community.
