Ugu residents are being urged to prepare for potentially disruptive weather as a Level 6 warning for heavy rain has been issued for the district.

The warning, issued by the South African Weather Service, is valid from Thursday, September 17 at 12:00 until Friday, September 18 at 23:59.

Ugu District Municipality warned that heavy rainfall could result in flooding, infrastructure damage, service disruptions and difficult travel conditions.

The warning covers the Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umzumbe and Umuziwabantu local municipalities.

Residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.

The municipality has issued the following safety advice:

• Avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers, low-lying bridges and fast-flowing streams.
• Never drive or walk through floodwater.
• Keep children away from rivers, streams, stormwater drains and flooded areas.
• Move valuables to higher ground where flooding is possible.
• Switch off electricity at the main supply if water enters the home, provided it is safe to do so.
• Follow official weather and emergency updates and avoid circulating unverified information.

The municipality urged residents to “be prepared, be safe and stay informed” as the weather system moves through the region.
