Medical internship training evaluation notes progress at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital
Strong performance was recorded across several critical training areas.
Port Shepstone Regional Hospital has been applauded for recording significant progress in the quality and organisation of medical internship training.
This follows a formal evaluation conducted by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) on September 28 and 29.
The evaluation assessed the hospital’s management, critical training domains, supervision, workload, teaching and training programmes, intern assessments, logbooks, and overall suitability as a medical internship training site.
The assessment report confirms that the hospital meets the required benchmark for an internship training site, while identifying specific areas that require continued improvement.
The evaluation demonstrated strong performance across several critical training areas. Anaesthesia, orthopaedics and psychiatry achieved the highest scores, indicating that these disciplines fully met the evaluation criteria.
Obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, internal medicine, general surgery and family medicine achieved moderate scores, reflecting satisfactory performance in areas that may require further strengthening.
The evaluators also recognised the progress at the hospital over the years. They congratulated the CEO and hospital medical management team for their commitment to creating a conducive environment for internship training.
The evaluation also found that interns receive regular teaching and training across the clinical domains, with all domains scoring above average for teaching and training.
Accident and emergency was particularly commended for its structured rotation, twice-daily consult rounds, broad clinical exposure and formal end of rotation assessment.
Among the areas identified for attention were structured monthly feedback for internship logbooks, full orientation of new interns, accommodation and management, theatre exposure in certain disciplines and the organisation of family medicine rotation.
