Izotsha’s sports stars shine

Academic and sports awards and badges were handed out at the intermediate and senior phase assembly on Monday this week.

Izotsha Primary experienced a number of highlights at the end of a busy last week of term, with the senior rugby boys on tour to Glenwood, where they fared well.

The senior hockey and netball girls attended coaching clinics as well as matches at Sportweni.

The following learners were selected for the respective Ugu hockey teams: U12 – Casey Bense, Tommi Johnson, Tyr Johnson and Grayson Greco; U13 – Taylor Burmeister, Zia Jasson, Olivia Browne, Naledi Gumede, Jaime Mather-Pike, Tristan Eva, Jacob Steynberg, Peter Koegelenberg and U14 – Reece Greco.

Jesse Langton and Lethokuhle Magubane were selected for the U11 SKZN cricket team, and Kaylee Du Plessis has been awarded Ugu colours for U12 netball.

Declan van As (U12), Sabelo Sithole (U12), Reece Moynihan (U12), Jacob Steynberg (U13) and Sphephelo Mlambo (U13) were selected for the respective lower South Coast rugby teams to attend SKZN rugby trials.

Olivia Browne represented Ugu at the Inter-District Tennis Tournament in Pietermaritzburg, where she played well.

Peter Koegelenberg and Ella Leonard had great results at the Level 3 Regional Swimming Championships in Richards Bay.

Peter achieved gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle, silver in the 50m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley and bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Ella achieved silver in the 50m individual medley (U19 – she was the youngest swimmer in this event) and 50m freestyle, and bronze in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

The Izotsha Teachers Who Care group hosted an Easter fundraiser last Friday, and learners wore civvies. They had the option of wearing an Easter hat, and classes paraded their hats at an assembly, and prizes were awarded for the best hat in each grade.

Also, overall prizes were awarded, and the foundation phase winner was Ntando Chombo (Grade 1), and the intermediate and senior phase winner was Tristan Eva (Grade 7). They received vouchers valued at R150 from KC’s Coffee Shop.
