SCOTTBURGH’s monkey population must be chattering with relief. For once the spotlight has shifted to another unwanted species (by some, anyway)… the feral cat.
Caravanners in particular are having a hissy fit about the cats ‘noisy mating and fouling up tents with stinking pee’.
Making matters worse, they say the felines don’t even control the rodent population as a mystery cat lover apparently feeds them regularly with… KFC!
Needless to say, the claws are out for ‘Cat Woman’.
Groups like the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and SPCA are appealing for common sense to prevail. They are trying their best to control the feral population through sterilisation.
However, they say it doesn’t help if people put out poison bait which not only condemns the animals to a cruel death, but doesn’t solve the problem either.
It merely makes room for more cats to move in and the organisations have to start the sterilisation process all over again.
Perhaps both sides can compromise for the time being:
* Close up tents and caravan windows, like one would do for monkeys anyway.
* Seal the scraps from the braai in bins;
* And feed the KFC to a homeless person rather than a healthy mouser.
