DEAR Editor,-
Civilised European countries, classified as ‘first world countries’, have provided beaches for those who wish to swim in the nude. More than 40 years ago, nudist beaches in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and the-then communist Yugoslavia, catered for those wishing to swim nude.
Perhaps South Africans lack the maturity to accept a nudist beach? In accordance with Zulu culture, more than 32 years ago, the labourers on my farm, aged between 18 and 60 years, worked topless on my plantations and on their own homesteads.
Those who so vehemently oppose this concept should bear in mind that it would be preferable to classifying those in favour as satanists. Consider the perpetrators of horrendous, inhuman, savage attacks on women, raping of babies and children, armed robberies and hijacking. If nude swimming does not appeal to one, then visit another beach.
The only danger of swimming at Mpenjati could be the high level of E.coli bacteria infecting the water. A few years ago, a Capetonian who accidently scraped his knee against a rock while swimming at this pleasure resort, was obliged to have his leg amputated at the knee.
It would be appreciated if the ‘powers that be’ and any other protester, rather focus on actively reducing violent and serious crime on the South Coast and ensure a low, safe E-coli bacteria level in the water.
Perhaps the government, via the SABC, could also remove pornographic advertisements.
