Rambling Rush: Home alone is for the birds

To say she had her feathers ruffled would be putting it mildly.

IF Jim Carrey, aka pet detective Ace Ventura, ever had to bring out another movie, you can be sure former South Coast Herald journalist Angela Kelly will not star in it.

However, if Macaulay Culkin had to call back the past with another Home Alone movie, well, then she just might find herself in a leading role.

But it would not be in a role similar to those in which Sandra Bullock features. Angela believes she bears a striking resemble to Ms Bullock, both in looks and behaviour, if not bank account.

Sandra normally attacks the danger. In the case of ‘Sandrela’ the opposite is true.

Here’s what happened.

Her boyfriend had gone off with the boys to watch the golf at Sun City, leaving her to house sit, home alone, with Harley the African grey parrot, and other assorted pets.

Everything was going fine. “This is a breeze,” she thought. Until she heard a voice at her ankles, saying “Bobo, Bobo!”

‘Sandrela’ nearly jumped out of her skin. “It was the bird, somehow he had gotten out of his cage,” she gasped.

“He had pushed his water bowl across and squeezed through this tiny hole,” she said.

He is named Harley as his ‘dad’ is a keen on motorbikes, but more about that later.

‘Sandrela’ now had the task of getting the bird back into his cage, something way easier said than done.

“He was biting and pecking at me. He could sense I was frightened of him,” she said.

“Every time I got close, he said ‘voetsek’. That bird talks non-stop, it’s unbelievable,” she said.

A 911 type call to the boyfriend followed.

After calming her nerves he suggested she call in the big guns. “Only my mother can handle Harley, give her a call,” he laughed.

She eventually arrived, two hours later – at exactly the same time load-shedding kicked in.

“At least I wasn’t alone in the dark with that bird,” said ‘Sandrela’.

So what did she do while waiting for help to arrive?

“I tried chilling on the couch but Harley kept coming up behind me trying to peck me!” she lamented.

However, she did send a photo of the bird sitting on a bicycle to her boyfriend. (You’ll notice it’s out of focus as her hand was shaking).

“Hey, he’s chewing the seat, get him off there,” he said.

Eventually the mom threw a jersey over the bird and put it back in the cage. Order was restored.

Good news is that she (‘Sandrela’, not the mom), will be available for autographs next weekend, as she is making the trip to the South Coast from Empangeni for a school reunion – we won’t say which year.

Rumour has it that it will be on the back of a Harley-Davidson. What’s for sure is that Harley the parrot will be staying at home!
