SALLY-KATE was practically a celebrity in her small town. Beautiful and talented, she was well rounded academically, spiritually, and socially. She gave much to many, and she did so in many ways. Her life imitated Christ, and that was obvious to everyone she touched. Truly, she stripped off every weight that slowed her down in the race God set before her.
But then she was gone. Just two months before graduating from college, Sally Kate died in an automobile accident. Now, 50 years later, the memory of all she did still echoes. There is a family services centre, a children’s home, and a memorial park – all named in her honour and all so vital to people living in that community. Through her legacy, Sally Kate continues to run with endurance the race God set before her.
What about the race God sets before you? The good you do on earth – regardless of how brief a stay – is worth doing in imitation of Him. If you claim the salvation offered by Jesus’ death on the cross, then you will live forever in Heaven with Him – just like Sally Kate.
But just like Sally Kate, you can leave a legacy. Strip off the weight that slows you down and run with endurance His race, not yours. Buildings and parks may not be named in your honour, but just the memory of your doing will be an example and blessing when you are gone.
So today, do all the good you can to show God’s love and to make your workplace and the world a better place. At work and elsewhere, the memory of your doing will make a difference.
Just like Sally Kate.
Readings:
1 Corinthians 11:1 (NLT) And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
Hebrews 12:1(b) (NLT) since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, while I may never know who is following my example, please keep me focused on You – especially in my workplace. I want to influence others in positive ways. I want to bless coworkers by my example and influence while I live. I want the memory of my doing to count for something – now and after I leave this earth. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
