Daily Devotion: Guard your heart

You have to guard your heart from all the bad that could come out of your mouth.

RECENTLY a correctional officer was talking foul about a situation that just arose. This particular officer occasionally gives brothers on Life Row a hard time. He does not like me. But seeing his attitude, I chanced taking him to the side. I said he was too blessed to be so foul in his words.

There is a saying here on Life Row that may surprise you: what comes from your mouth first comes from your heart. If goodness comes out of your mouth, you are using your heart as the source of life for others in need. If evil comes out, your heart is no good for anyone. If that officer did not see my words as coming from my source of life, there is no telling what would have happened. But he did hear goodness, and my heart helped change his heart.

You have to guard your heart from all the bad that could come out of your mouth. If you don’t guard it, your heart cannot be the source of life for others – especially those who don’t like you. Hold fast to what Jesus gives your heart so it can carry out His will.

Think about this as you go to work today. Use your heart only as the source of life for others. Your words will surely follow.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray. Thank You for healing my heart and helping me guard it so I can hold fast to what You give me in all circumstances. Use my heart as the source of life for others in need. I promise, my words will surely follow. Amen.
