Daily Devotion: Be a part of the solution

Remember, God is working in you to do for His good pleasure.

A WOMAN with a big smile and pleasant countenance greeted me yesterday at my pharmacy’s intake window. She actually appeared to enjoy her job! Each time I come in, she’s like that. And of course, her demeanour is contagious – she instantly puts a big smile on my face. This clerk certainly knows how to “treat” her customers.

Now, you’re right. Public and nonprofit servants “treat” citizens, not customers. Those we serve hold much more than a business receipt in their pockets. Wherever you live, the people you serve have pockets holding some kind of a constitution – and that makes each one of the bosses rather than just one of the customers.

So the question becomes, how do you treat the citizens you serve?

As a public servant, you may treat each with heightened respect and the diligence reserved only for when a boss is in the room – but there’s more. As a Christian public servant, you must shine as lights on each of them – knowing God is also in the room.

I know it’s easy not to shine in this crooked and perverse generation – so much goes wrong in life. But remember, God is working in you to do for His good pleasure.

So at work today, don’t be subject to this world’s problems. Instead, be a part of God’s solution. Work hard, smile, and be blameless and harmless when “treating” each citizen. Above all, let every “boss” you serve truly see the contagious light of Christ shining in you!

Reading

Philippians 2:13-15 (NKJV) For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the opportunity to serve Your purposes. Help me shine as lights so all may see You as I serve them today. Help me be contagious with Your light throughout this entire workweek – and the next workweek, and the next, and the one after that! In the mighty name of your Son, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray today. Amen.
