OPINION: ‘Is this an example of sanitation for the nation?’

Needless to say, we are still without sanitation.

I was appalled to read that Hibiscus Coast Municipality is handing over houses to the Masinenge Informal Settlement in Uvongo, with sanitation. I live in Uvongo, (Little Switzerland) which is supposed to be an upper class suburb. We do not have sanitation and have extensive problems with sewage. The property on the hill has sewage running down the street on a weekly basis – my neighbours have a problem with their septic tank which is overflowing and a nasty smell emanating.

My husband and I have had numerous visits to DD Naidoo and made endless phone calls and all we get are promises that somebody will come back to us regarding waterborne sanitation. Many years ago they started with this project but it appears that the money in the budget was utilised elsewhere.

Needless to say, we are still without sanitation.

What is most upsetting is that we pay high rates but Masinenge residents, who do not pay rates, are supplied with sanitation.
