OPINION: ‘Margate has lost its sparkle’

Over weekends the beach and main road become extremely unpleasant areas.

DEAR Editor,-

I have been holidaying in Margate since 1965. For the past 20 years, I have had a holiday flat in Marine Drive, and my children have experienced wonderful times in Margate. As teenagers, this was the most wonderful place to let them enjoy their youth and summer holidays.

Regretful to say – crime has become a great problem. Last Wednesday, a woman’s purse was snatched out of her hands while paying for a pizza. Over weekends the beach and main road become extremely unpleasant, unsafe areas and afterwards, surrounding areas are left in an unhealthy mess. The thumping music emanating from taxis set parked car alarms off.

Margate has so much to offer, but unfortunately it has lost its ambiance and to a certain extent, also its main income … holidaymakers.
