DEAR Editor,-
In response to a reader’s request for feedback regarding the Marine Drive/Knox-Gore Road intersection, I can report that a mini-tender was awarded to a traffic engineer to conduct a traffic study in October 2014.
A preliminary report on a 12-hour traffic count at this intersection revealed that traffic lights were not warranted. This was based on three aspects, namely high traffic volumes and speed along Marine Drive and short queue lengths along Knox Gore Road and Orange Rocks Road. The recommendation was for the introduction of a roundabout.
The engineer was then instructed to conduct a further 12-hour count during the Easter peak season. The final report has again indicated that traffic lights are not warranted and the recommendation of a roundabout was confirmed. The report has been referred to the Department of Transport to make a final decision.
My personal view is that there is insufficient space for a proper roundabout at this intersection, but let us wait for the department to make a decision on the matter.
