OPINION: ‘A roundabout or robot will not work’

Any articulated vehicle or heavy goods truck travelling south to north would never be able to stop in time.

DEAR Editor,-

I agree with ‘I Robot’ and Cllr Peter Naude (SCH letters November 6) that a roundabout at the Knox-Gore/Marine Drive intersection would not work. I am a resident of Knox-Gore Road and use this intersection daily on numerous occasions. Unfortunately a traffic light (robot) system would also not work, as there is a blind downhill bend 150 metres away. Any articulated vehicle or heavy goods truck travelling south to north (even at a mere 60km) encountering five or six stationary cars parked at a red light, would never be able to stop in time and the resulting accidents would be horrific (viz Fields Hill).

The only solution I can offer is that Knox-Gore Road becomes a ‘left turn only’ during season and peak hours … or even permanently.
