OPINION: ‘Cllr Potter responds to sms queries’

The previous leaseholder of the Sharks' Den and caravan park used residents’ money to service his own debts.

DEAR Editor,-

In answer to the two queries raised in last week’s sms column of the Herald, I would like to respond as follows. The appalling situation at the old Sharks’ Den is not costing ratepayers, but the poor businessman who has held a lease for two years and not been able to carry out any upgrade due to HCM’s failure to competently deal with the issue of residents of the old caravan park, as this forms an integral part of the planned development. This is a shameful situation that has dragged on for four years, despite commitments and promises made by various officials during this period. There is nothing ‘sub judice’ about this state of affairs, just a failure of political will to provide service delivery and care for vulnerable residents and attempts to uplift this valuable part of Port Shepstone.

Regarding the unpaid water account, it is alleged that the previous leaseholder of the Sharks’ Den and caravan park used residents’ money to service his own debts and therefore did not pay Ugu or HCM for a considerable period.
