OPINION: ‘Lilly restored my faith in the police’

She went into the store and bought me R12 airtime so that I could phone the bank.

DEAR Editor,-

I had both a frightening and happy experience at the same time today, which has now restored my faith in our local police force. I was so impressed by the assistance I received from police officer Lilly Nheliswa Bidlaa from the Ramsgate Courts.

I was at an ATM at the Manaba SuperSpar during lunchtime on Tuesday (December 1) when I suspected that my bank card was being cloned or possibly be swallowed. There were four men surrounding me telling me to insert my pin number, but I felt something was wrong because the screen was not the usual one. Fortunately there was a police woman at the ATM next to the one I was using and I tapped her on the shoulder and said “Could you please help me when you have finished because I feel something is wrong here.” The officer immediately cancelled her own transaction since she understood what I was getting at. At that point, the men left.

I did not have any airtime on my phone so Lilly went into the store and bought me R12 airtime so that I could phone the bank emergency number to stop any money being withdrawn from my account. She wouldn’t even let me reimburse her for the airtime! I really am so impressed by such kindness for a complete stranger – to go that extra mile while off duty. Thanks Lilly, you were definitely my angel watching over me today – God bless you.
